Rivers, Sea and Shore: Reflections on Water

An incredible exhibition of 50 beautiful and dramatic paintings exploring more than a century of American life on the water, from 1830 to 1945. Rivers, Sea and Shore was organized from the maritime collection of Arthur J. Phelan. It begins with portraits of ships commissioned by sea captains, and then explores American artists’ changing views of rivers, seas and shores from 19th century picturesque villages up to 20th century industrial waterfronts. Artists in this exhibition include Alfred Bricher, William Trost Richards, William Merritt Chase, Willard Metcalf, and Reginald Marsh.
